Recently, a company in The Netherlands examined the possibilities of applying Light Emitting Diodes (LED) illumination in their vending machines to replace the standard Fluorescence tubes. Several tests were conducted together in close cooperation with the client and Everbrite Lighting Technologies.
A group of LEDs are described typically as light engines. These light engines are specially designed for the application. Compared to traditional light sources, LEDs are more expensive. Therefore, the client studied the feasibilities of applying LED light engines in the Selecta vending machines. Key issue for the research: maintaining light output and maximise energy and raw material savings.
In summary, these are the test results:
- » LEDs reduce illumination energy consumption by +/- 70%.
- » LEDs are additionally reducing the cooling capacity required. The LED light engine generates less heat in the cooled vending machine.
- » Savings on energy and materials for 2500 vending machine delivered, equipped with 2 x 36 Watt FL tube over five (5) years.
- » Energy reduction totally 5000 KWh machine or 800,00. (0,16 per KWh).
- » Savings for 2500 machines: 12.500.000 KWh or 2.000.000,00.
- » No need to replace FL tubes. Reducing maintenance cost and expected 50.000 FL tubes less disposed over a 5-year period.
- » The Return Of Investment is achieved in a period less than 12 months.
- » The ROI might be influenced even more positively by tax reductions related to these specific investments made to encourage energy savings.
